“The Champions League is being cruel to us this season” Xavi Hernandez laments Barca’s elimination chances

FC Barcelona encountered a draw of 03-03 against Inter Milan in their last match at their home venue, which put the team at high-risk of getting eliminated from the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. The administration has burned a hefty amount of cash for this transfer window signing players like Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Marcos Alonso, and many more still failed to bamboozle fate.

The Barca boss, Xavi Hernandez, is utterly disappointed with the result of the last match. Reminiscing the team’s performance against Bayern Munich, the Spanish blamed the refereeing system for their first-leg defeat at San Siro. The match officials denied the last-minute penalty, which favored Bayern and diminished the fate of Barca.

“The Champions League is being cruel to us this season. Against Bayern Munich, we were not clinical enough. There were other circumstances (refereeing issues) in Milan last week, but there is no need to talk about, and then tonight it is down to defensive mistakes.”

While questioning the decision-making skill of the players, the former La Masian blamed some defensive mistakes by the players for the second leg draw and also took his part of the blame too.

“We didn’t defend well. You pay a high price for mistakes in the Champions League. Errors in defense cost us the game.”

“But we are a team, and if the team fails, I also fail.”

Last year, Barcelona was not a competitive team as their main player, Lionel Messi, left the club and the club was going through a serious financial crisis. Remembering those days, the coach was extremely upset about this season’s performance.

“Last season, the feeling was that we were not good enough, but this time it has been down to mistakes. We had the games in our hands and we let it escape, in Munich above all, but also against Inter tonight. We have to be self-critical too. It has been down to our mistakes.”

The FIFA World Cup winning midfielder trusts the process and has confidence in his boys. He still believes that by minimizing the mistakes, Barca will be back in the winning race once again in the upcoming seasons of the CL.

“Football is a game of errors and you have to minimize them.”
