UFC champ Alexander Volkanovski reveals desire to fight Conor McGregor at 145: “It would be pretty special”

Back in July 11th, 2015, the ‘notorious’ Conor McGregor defeated Chad Mendes via KO/TKO in round 2 to become the UFC Featherweight champion at Las Vegas, Nevada. Currently the same title is held by Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski.

Volk has successfully defended his featherweight title four times, defeating Max Holloway (twice), Brian Ortega, and Chan Sung Jung. Many fans continue to speculate what would happen if prime Conor faced off against Alex.

Alexander Volkanovski willing to take on Conor McGregor at 145!

McGregor was undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with during his featherweight reign in the UFC. McGregor moved to the lightweight division after his remarkable run at 145.

Currently McGregor looks to be on the heavier side and his potential bout against ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler is expected to take place at either Welterweight or Middleweight. Bul Volk still wants to fight the former champ at 145.

“The only champ I haven’t fought in the featherweight division is Conor McGregor. Conor in his prime in featherweight division obviously would be an all-time. If we could somehow get prime Conor vs. prime Volk, it would be pretty special.” Volkanovski said.

The Aussie currently has a matchup against one of his divisions finest coming up so the matchup against Conor seems unlikely.

What’s next for Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski?

To unify the featherweight title, Volk will now compete against the interim 145-lb title holder, Yair Rodriguez. On Saturday, July 8, the main event of UFC 290 will take place in Las Vegas and feature a headliner fight between El Pantera and The Great.

After defeating Brian Ortega and Josh Emmett, Rodriguez has cemented his position as the number one ranked fighter in his weight division. Volk on the other hand, went on an undefeated run at the UFC up until his bout against the reigning lightweight king Makhachev.

McGregor in his current form will probably never fight Alex. However, if the two fighters did meet in their primes, that would’ve probably been a clash to remember.

How do you see a hypothetical match between Volkanovski and Conor playing out?
