Update on Saivion Smith: Lions’ CB carted off field by ambulance, prognosis of neck injury not yet known

Saivion Smith was taken to the hospital after colliding with Patriots’ tight end Hunter Henry during the Lions-Patriots game last week. Smith was evaluated for a neck injury after being taken to the hospital. As of now, the outcome of the tests is unknown.

It was a terrifying scene when the ambulance arrived on the field to take Smith off, who was then placed on a backboard. As the ambulance was leaving the field, a man, identified as Smith’s father by the Fox broadcast, walked out of the stands and got inside. The video of Smith’s collision with Hunter doesn’t look that violent, but it had a significant impact on Smith nonetheless.

Later on the game, the Lions confirmed that Smith had movement in his limbs and was still being assessed for a neck injury. After the game, Campbell stated that Smith was doing well enough that the team will try to get him back on the team plane for the journey back to Detroit.

Good to know he’s doing better.” Jared Goff, Lions’ quarterback, said after the game. However, Goff deems it as “always scary” to witness a player taken off the field in an ambulance.

The Lions felt the absence of Smith in the game big time as they were destroyed by the Patriots by 29-0. The Tampa-born Smith played college football at Alabama, spent 2020 with the Dallas Cowboys, and spent 2021 with the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions, all while appearing in a total of nine games.
