The young punter was named second-team All-SWAC and he also earned third-team FCS Freshman All-America honors. He attended Buford High School, where he played for four seasons.

Buford High School won two state championships during his final two years, with Mata contributing game-winning kicks in both championship games. He made a high school record of 16-of-23 field goal hits and 116-of-121 PATs combined as a junior and senior. 

Now, he plays for the Colorado Buffaloes and is already cementing his name because of his expectional skills. In a recent game, his final goals helped the team win a game against Arizona State. Since then, everyone has praised the punter and is impressed by his immense talent.

Deion Sanders, who sparked controversy over bizarre statement on QB recruitments, also talked about Alejandro Mata recently. He talked about his recent contribution in helping them a game that was significant for the Buffaloes as it was their first win in the Pac-12 Conference that season.

Sanders emphasized his belief in the young punter’s abilities and encouraged him to celebrate his success. He emphasized that when others didn’t believe in him, he knew he was a great addition to the team. 

“Yeah, I wanted him to do his thing. Mata is Mata. Guys, you didn’t believe in Mata. I believe in Mata.”

The coach also stated that the punter never misses the goal and this is what is great about him.

“Why do you think I brought him here? Mata don’t miss. You call a timeout and freeze him all you want. That don’t mean nothing to Mata. That’s who he is and that’s what he always says to me when I walk over to him and give him a hug. He says, ‘I don’t miss’, and I love it.”

Sanders shared that he has advised the punter to continue doing what he is doing and enjoy this time as it’s his time to shine.

“So I told him to do your thing. Do your thing. Get your shine on. It’s your moment, baby, live it. That’s what I told him.”
