Beneil Dariush claims, Dustin Poirier should consider ‘retiring’ if he doesn’t want to fight the top contenders

Dustin Poirier has fought and won against some of the biggest names in the featherweight and lightweight divisions. Even recently, he took on ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler in a long-anticipated bout and managed to pull off a victory. However, upcoming Lightweight contender Beneil Dariush believes that the ‘Diamond’ should either fight new prospects or leave the sport.

Beneil Dariush has been climbing the ranks for a long time now. The Iranian American has managed to rack up an impressive 8 fight-winning streak. Recently Mateusz Gamrot entered the UFC as a hot prospect. Beneil Dariush was put to the test against the new blood in a lightweight matchup on the UFC 280 fight card.

One of the biggest problems in some UFC weight classes has been top-ranked players gatekeeping younger fighters from reaching the top. The problem is especially prevalent in the Welterweight and the Lightweight division. Sometimes it seems like the top fighters either only want to fight themselves or want to chase money fights.

What did Beneil Dariush say on Dustin Poirier?

Recently it was revealed that Dustin was not interested in fighting Beneil. The Dariush was very frustrated while discussing the matter with Submission Radio, “I wish he’d be a little bit more clear as to like, what is it that doesn’t excite him about me? Are my fights not exciting enough? Or is it a skill issue? Or is it just because I don’t have the name?

“If it’s just because of the name, man, he should really consider – and I say this as nicely as possible; I’m not trying to be a dick – but he should really consider retiring. Because if you’re going to look for the names, if you’re going to look to fight only guys that, you know, the name will get you – oh, there’s dogs coming,” he said in frustration.

Dariush was expected to fight for the lightweight title but the Islam Makhachev vs Alexander Volkanovski fight was scheduled first. Dustin might be looking for a fourth fight against McGregor but fans would probably like to see him in a title contender fight against Beneil sometime in 2023.
