Chelsea close to signing Thiago Silva as the defender confirms PSG departure

Thiago Silva has confirmed he is ready to take a new challenge as his current contract expires in Paris Saint-Germain. Chelsea are in a pool position to sign the defender on a two-year deal as a free agent.

Earlier this year, the Brazilian was optimistic to sign a new contract with the French club.

He has been a key player at Parc Des Princes since his arrival. His passion and dedication for the club won the heart of club’s fans.

However, PSG were reluctant to tie him with any contract extension as they look forward to giving opportunities to young players.

As a result, Thiago Silva wants to depart after spending 8 years in the club since coming from AC Milan in 2012.

For the last couple of days, as per reports, Chelsea have been eager to offer the veteran a two-year contract. Chelsea manager Frank Lampard wants to strengthen his defensive line and believes in the Brazilian’s vast experience at the top level.

On the other side, Fiorentina are also monitoring the Brazilian’s current situation. The Italian side wants to grab the golden opportunity to sign the player free.

What Thiago Silva said about his future

Paris Saint-Germain faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, where they lost 0-1 to the German side.

When asked about his next destination after the match, the player said to RMC Sport, “It was my last game in Paris. I am sad. I apologise to the fans. I thank all the supporters for their love. I’ll come back, with another role, in this club I loved. I want to play for another 3-4 years and play in the World Cup in Qatar.”

“I’ve not accepted any bid. Reports of agreement reached with Fiorentina are NOT true. My agent is talking with Fiorentina as with other clubs. I’ll decide on next days with my family”. Chelsea are leading the race and waiting for final answer. Silva said to Skysport.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel showed his utmost gratitude to the player expressing his wish to keep him.

“I’m going to talk about this with the club, Leonardo, and all those who are in a position to create the team,” he said. “Thiago was my captain and it was a pleasure to have a player with quality and personality like him.”

“He extended his contract with us for two months. He gave his heart and energy on the pitch, he gave everything to win this Champions League. He deserved to win it.” Tuchel added.

“We went through some tough times, there were some big disappointments. I’m absolutely proud that he was my captain.

“We’re going to talk to the club now, with him, to clarify the situation. No matter what the decision is, he’ll still be my player. He’s in my heart and it was incredible to play with him.”

How Silva’s arrival can help Chelsea

Chelsea stood 4th in the 2019-20 Premier League season and also booked their place in next season’s Champions League. Despite that, Lampard’s team struggled at the back conceding 54 goals in the last season’s EPL.

The north London club has already confirmed signing Timo Werner from RB Leipzig and Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. But still, Lampard needs to sort out his defensive options to improve their overall performance for the next season.

In that case, They have already enquired about Ben Chilwell to sign him from Leicester City. Also, Thiago Silva can be a great addition to the club. The 35-year old is capable of providing solidity at the back with his immense experience. Also, the player is confident enough to continue at top-level football.

The player did not receive a perfect send-off in his last game for the French club. Yet, his impressive performance against Bayern’s top-class attack proves he can hold on his level further.
