Ex-Alabama QB Bryce Young claps back at size and height concerns ahead of NFL draft: “I can’t grow”

Bryce Young, a former Alabama star, is frequently questioned about his height because of his short stature as a quarterback. The quarterback recently defended a question about his height in a confident manner.

The Alabama team was led by the former Heisman Trophy winner to the SEC championship in 2021. He broke Tua Tagovailoa’s tie for the most touchdown passes in Alabama program history in his fifth game with five or more touchdown passes in a career.

Does Bryce Young’s height have an impact on his performance?

Being tall enough prevents a defensive pass rusher from being able to tip the ball at the line of scrimmage, which is sometimes a crucial consideration for NFL players though many short QB are also performing well.

Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals, who is only 5.11″ tall and currently the smallest quarterback in the NFL, is also one of the league’s fastest passers and the first quarterback in the team’s history to be selected to the Pro Bowl twice in his first three seasons.

By virtue of his performance, he joined the likes of Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, and Patrick Mahomes as the only NFL quarterbacks selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the previous two seasons (2020–21).

The 21-year-old is very aware of this, and in his playing style, he plays with such assurance that his short stature does not seem to prevent him from giving his all. Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer recently questioned him about his height.

“I’m confident in my abilities,” the star player exclaimed with a smile. The QB knows he probably can’t grow taller in this age but he seemed to have worked very hard to keep himself ahead of those who are longer in height than him.

“I’m myself, I know who I am, I’m confident in my abilities,” he replied. “For me, I don’t know how to play the game another way. I’ve been this size relative to the people around me for my entire life. … I can’t grow. I can’t get any taller.”

Beyond height, the quarterback’s superior football IQ, accuracy, anticipation, and arm strength allowed him to establish himself as one of the top NFL draft picks.YB had a passer rating of 114.9 and completed 245 of 380 passes for 3,325 yards, 32 touchdowns, and five interceptions in his 2022 season.
