Ahead of his fight against Gilbert Burns in the co-main event of UFC 287, Masvidal spoke with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani about a variety of topics, including his upcoming ‘Gamebred boxing’ event, his rivalry with Covington and Jon Anik, and his thoughts on the current UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.

Masvidal said that he tries not to talk too much so as not to offend UFC President Dana White, who he claims takes advantage of fighters like him who love to fight and are willing to put their lives on the line for the sport.

Masvidal’s comment is not entirely surprising, given his past disputes with White over pay and negotiations. Masvidal’s upcoming fight against Burns is important since a win might jeopardize the UFC’s plans for a title match between Edwards and Covington. Despite his love for fighting, Masvidal would accept a fight against Edwards no matter what the price was.

In the past, Masvidal has been in an identical position when his exchanges with Kamaru Usman for the title fight fell through due to pay disputes. He then took the fight on short notice and came up short on UFC’s fight island in Abu Dhabi. However, Masvidal is now gearing up for another championship run, and his fight against Burns could be a turning point in his career.

Fans may be surprised by Masvidal’s statements about White taking advantage of competitors, but it’s not uncommon for boxers to clash with organizations over salary and negotiations. Fighters like Jorge Masvidal are a unique breed in the world of combat sports. They become fan favorites and encourage numerous more to enter the cage because of their passion for fighting and readiness to take on anyone.
