“I think he thought he might have lost, He was even saying, ‘We need to do a rematch’” Alexander Volkanovski reveals Islam Makhachev’s reaction ahead of win by decision at UFC 284

After losing to Islam Makhachev at UFC284, Alexander Volkanovski could not fulfill his dream to become a double champion, but while discussing the fight, Volkanovski demanded a rematch.

The highly anticipated UFC284 event featured Islam Makhachev against Alexander Volkanovski in an exciting octagon battle, and it took place at Perth’s RAC Arena. Makhachev successfully defended his lightweight title against Alexander Volkanovski with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46 in favor.

Volkanovski expressed his post-fight reactions and thoughts while talking with The MMA Hour on  Monday. The Great thinks even though he lost the fight but managed to prove that he was the better fighter that day but the decision was not up to him.

“A lot of people thought I won that fight, I thought I won that fight, and I moved up. We’re talking about pound-for-pound. Imagine if we were in the same weight class. I don’t want to be that guy, but if he was just a featherweight in my division, I’d squash him. It’s a walk in the park. No offense to him, but that’s legit.” said Volkanovski.

Islam Makhachev successfully defended his lightweight title against Alexander Volkanovski and became the new pound-for-pound number one in the world.. Many mixed martial artists, not just Volkanovski, flocked to Twitter to vent their displeasure with the result of the fight and the judge’s verdict.

According to the current featherweight champ, Islam also thought he might have lost as he heard Islam saying in his corner during the fight asking for a rematch.

”He didn’t say loss, but I mean, he thought, ‘We need to do the rematch’ thinking that I was going to get my hand raised. Then he ended up telling people in the media backstage that he wants a rematch anyway. So, he knows. I’m not taking anything away – it was a close fight.” Volk further added.

While talking about the possibility of a rematch, Volk thinks it totally depends on Makhachev. According to The Great, the Dagestani fighter knows well this is going to leave a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths and that is why Islam is going to want to prove it to people.
