“I would be delighted if he continued” PSG director keen to keep Lionel Messi at club amid rumors of exit following UCL disaster

Lionel Messi is undoubtedly one of the best soccer players in the world. The 2022 World Cup champion has won every possible trophy throughout his career, and there is no doubt any side in the world will be happy to secure his services.

The seven times Ballon d’Or winner’s current contract with Paris Saint Germain will expire at the end of the 2022/2023 season. Following PSG’s Champions League exit after losing to Bayern Munich 3-0 on aggregate in the round of 16, there are speculations that Messi may be looking for a new challenge in his illustrious career.

Despite all speculation, PSG director Luis Campos is keen to put down a new deal with the Argentinian talisman. According to Spanish journalist Guillem Balague, Campos has already reached a verbal agreement with Leo’s father, Jorge Messi.

“I would like to keep him in this project; I can’t hide it. I would be delighted if he (Messi) continued. We are discussing at the moment to try to reach the goal and continue to have him with us,” Campos stated.

Which other teams can Lionel Messi potentially go to?

Paris Saint Germain remains Messi’s favorite club for the upcoming season. But, given PSG’s infamous failure in the Champions League, the PSG board must convince their No. 30 that they can challenge for the UCL title next season.

On top of that, Messi’s choice may be affected by Kylian Mbappe’s decision regarding whether to stay at PSG or leave for a new challenge. Kylian has always wanted to play for the Spanish giant Real Madrid, and after PSG’s failure to secure a Champions League, he may finally make a decision to move on.

Among the rumors, the most popular one seems to be a magical return to his former club FC Barcelona, where he spent 20 years and rose to become one of the most successful soccer players of all time. However, given Barcelona’s current financial situation, this seems highly unlikely.

Another possible rumor is that he will possibly return to his childhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, in his native Argentina. Balague claims that it is impossible for Messi to go back there, as he still wants to challenge for his fifth Champions League title.

Also interfering with Messi’s trip back to Argentina was Lionel’s wife, Antonella Rocuzzo. According to many reports, she urged Messi to join David Beckham’s MLS soccer team, Inter Miami.

If things go completely south, we might even see Messi reunite with his former coach, Pep Guardiola, as Manchester City are one of the very few clubs that can meet Messi’s financial demands. Who knows?
