MMA star Islam Makhachev sets sights on beating Leon Edwards and capturing welterweight title: “I can strike with him”

Islam Makhachev is yet to find out who his next opponent is. A few months ago, the lightweight champion called out Leon Edwards for a fight on Twitter. The Russian fighter challenged Rocky to step up and face him at the Abu Dhabi card in October.

With Edwards eyeing a title defense during the same timeframe, fans were excited as there was potential for two of the best fighters from their respective divisions to square off against each other.

Islam Makhachev sets sights on winning vs Leon Edwards and becoming the two-division champion

Islam Makhachev sat down for an interview with his close friend and former two-division champion Daniel Cormier. While having a conversation on DC’s YouTube channel, the lightweight champion revealed he wants to fight Leon Edwards next. Makhachev also claimed that he is better than the welterweight champion in all departments and is confident that he will become a double champ.

“I’m sure I can be double champ. I can beat Leon Edwards. I can beat this guy I know. Brother, okay he showed good (takedown) defense. But with me, it’s gonna be different. I can strike with him, I can grapple with him, wrestling. Anywhere I can beat this guy. Just give me one chance, and that’s it. Maybe after I win a second belt, they’re gonna put me best pound-for-pound.”

The lightweight champion is positive about his chances of beating Leon Edwards. However, it will be difficult for Islam as going up a weight class and competing for the first time against a fighter who is very well-rounded and is a dangerous striker.

Who will Makhachev fight next in the UFC?

UFC President Dana White confirmed last weekend that a rematch between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev is on the cards after the Brazilian lightweight’s big first-round knockout win over Beneil Dariush at UFC 289. The UFC is apparently, targeting the Abu Dhabi card as the Russian lightweight champion will draw a lot of fans.

However, Islam is against this idea as he defeated Charles Oliveira convincingly during their first fight. But considering Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will fight next month, it is highly unlikely that they will look for a quick turnaround. Moreover, there is a good chance that their matchup will turn out into an all-out war and it will be difficult to recover from the injuries that they suffer.

Unless and until, UFC decided to grant Islam Makhachev his wish of fighting Leon Edwards, he will defend his lightweight title against Charles Oliveira in a rematch. Do let us know in the comments section who you think should Islam Makhachev fight next.
