NBA All-Star Paul George discloses how he became close to his father through “fishing” to Warriors’ Klay Thompson

For Paul George, basketball has been a central part of his life since a young age. Growing up in Palmdale, California, he had the support of his parents, Paul Sr. and Paulette George. His parents supported him by nurturing his talent and passion for the game.

However, it wasn’t until Paul Sr. introduced his son to fishing that their relationship took a different turn, which is why Paul George chose to share this heartwarming story of how he developed a deep bond with his father through fishing.

Recently, Paul shared this story with the Golden State Warriors sharpshooter, Klay Thompson.

Paul George shares fishing experiences with his dad

For Paul George and his father, fishing was more than just catching fish. It was their medium to establish some sort of connection.

In Paul George’s words, ” We could chat about anything and anything while we were fishing”. While fishing, their conversations weren’t always about basketball.

They discussed life, dreams, and even challenges. This shared activity became a canvas for them  to paint their thoughts, hopes, and aspirations

Just as fishing requires patience and persistence, it became a metaphor for the qualities George’s father instilled in him. The unpredictable nature of the sport taught young Paul George that success doesn’t always come easily.

Both Klay Thompson and Paul George love fishing

Paul George and Klay Thompson are both NBA stars. Klay is the son of former NBA player Mychal Thompson and was twice named to the first team of the Pac-10.

He is one of the best three-point shooters in NBA history. In the first round of the 2011 NBA draft, Golden State chose Thompson with the 11th overall pick.

Thompson has won four NBA championships with the Warriors and he is a five-time NBA All-Star. Also, he has won gold medals with the American national team on their Olympic and World Cup squads.

Despite being rivals on the basketball court, George and Thompson found common ground in their off-court experiences. Fishing kept both of them glued together.

Paul George developed his love for fishing from his father. On the other hand, Thompson’s love for the ocean is palpable.

His fishing adventures often take him to the coastal waters of California. Paul George speaks highly of his friendship with Klay Thompson. In his words ” Although I’ve always admired Klay’s skill, our bond got stronger by fishing together”.

Thompson and George also use their passion for fishing to engage with their audience and advance environmental protection. They often raise awareness of the need to preserve the waterways. It’s so fascinating how sports can bring two people together and help them find common ground beyond the game itself.
