Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs re-sign WR Justin Watson to lucrative 2-years $6M deal with $1.4M guaranteed

Kansas City Chiefs, led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, have made a significant move in the NFL free agency market by re-signing wide receiver Justin Watson to bolster their offensive firepower for the upcoming NFL season.

Before joining the Chiefs team, Watson spent the first four years of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being drafted as a fifth-round pick by them and proved his worth in Kansas City by posting career highs in several categories including receptions and yards.

Justin Watson to stay in the Chiefs squad for two more years

The Twitter account of Watson’s agency JL Sports disclosed the Chiefs decided to keep their veteran wide receiver Justin Watson on the roster after a one-year tryout contract.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed the details first citing the Chiefs have re-signed Watson to a two-year contract, $3.5 million, with $1.4 million guaranteed and $2.5 million in incentives to potentially reach $6 million, expiring at the end of the 2024 NFL season when the 27-year-old will turn into an unrestricted free agent.

Watson’s previous deal with the Chiefs was worth just over $1 million dollars for one year and the new deal nearly doubles his AAV up to $1.75 million, hence, he is getting a fair amount to stay with the franchise. The WR too proved his worth in Kansas City in the absence of star wide receiver Tyreek Hill by holding the record 315 receiving yards and two touchdowns for the team last season.

The Chiefs earlier lost their two key wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman to free agency this offseason, paving the way for Watson to increase his role on the team’s offense.

With Justin, Kansas City now has four receivers in their squad including Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore, and Kadarius Toney, however, Toney’s health and Moore’s inexperience might provide an opportunity for Watson to prove his worth once again.

The Chiefs’ management, led by General Manager Brett Veach, continues to make bold moves to solidify their roster and position the team for long-term success, and the re-signing of Watson is another step in that direction.

With the Mahomes-Watson connection expected to flourish in the upcoming seasons, Chiefs fans have reason to be optimistic about their team’s chances of winning another Super Bowl title and they are looking forward to seeing Watson’s continued growth on the field as the team gears up for the upcoming season.
