Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov are two of the fiercest rivals in the combat sports world and to date, these lightweights still seem to share bad blood with each other. Despite retiring from MMA in 2021, Khabib still has not forgiven Conor for his actions in the build-up to their fight and the same could be said about the Irishman who still has bitter feelings about The Eagle.
Moving ahead let’s take a look at Khabib’s controversial take on ring girls and what his arch-nemesis Conor McGregor had to say about his comments.
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Beef with UFC ring girl
Last year Khabib Nurmagomedov made a few statements against the ring girls and called them useless and questioned their role in combat sports. While speaking at a press conference, the former UFC champion took a dig at ring girls and explained why MMA promotions should not employ them.
“Look, I don’t want to offend anyone, ring girls are the most useless people in martial arts. What is their purpose? I have a question. You can show that it is the second round on the screen. I realize that is a history. History knows many mistakes,” said the Dagestani.
“We read history to avoid mistakes of the past in the future. If we look in the history, it says they are useless. That is my personal opinion. For example, I sit with my father. Every person has his own preferences, the culture, and values. I come to fight night, sit with my father,” he added.
“These people are passing by and showing that it is the second round. But no one looks at the plate. I feel uncomfortable with my father. I am not against it. If you want you can do it, but don’t impose it to me, do it aside. There are the designated places for it. I think we must not mix all of it. This is my private opinion,” he further added.
UFC ring girls offer their response to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s comments
Khabib Nurmagomedov came under a lot of scrutiny for his claims by former fighters and ring girls. Many labeled the Russian fighter as sexist and ring girls slammed him for his beliefs. Long-time ring girl Arianny Celeste and Sara Jones were few who responded to the Eagle’s remarks.
“We’re all excited to see Ebanie Bridges fight again on this card, as a former ring girl turned boxer, we love to support her. It also shows the opportunities that can arise from being a ring girl, the opportunities created and the different paths taken.”
“Khabib has made a comment regarding ring girls in MMA and branded them ‘useless’ and a ‘distraction’ from the fight. Which seems absurd to me as the girls only ever enter a cage or ring during the interval, so they’re not distracting from any fighting taking place,” said Jones in an interview.
Conor McGregor enters Khabib Nurmagomedov-UFC ring girl feud and trolls the former UFC champion
Khabib’s controversy with the UFC ring girl became a hot topic on the internet and everyone was sharing their opinion on social media. The former champion’s rival Conor McGregor jumped into this feud and shared a meme on Twitter. McGregor trolled Khabib by sharing a meme based on a template from the popular sitcom Simpsons‘ character Waylon Smithers.
UFC ring girl Brittney Palmer who was involved in the controversy retweeted Conor’s meme and joked about it. Like a true Gentleman, Khabib refrained from engaging his former rival or the ring girls.
