Bucs’ Kyle Trask ready for post-Tom Brady era QB duel with Baker Mayfield: “I have just been told it’s an open competition”

After Tom Brady‘s retirement, Kyle Trask thought of himself as the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the franchise brought in a once-talented prodigy to keep up the competition.

With Baker Mayfield’s addition, the starting role has been inciting confusion among the fans and even the players, who also want to grab the opportunity. However, fitting a shoe left behind by a superstar like Brady isn’t an easy task, but they are up for it.

Recently, in an interview, Kyle expressed his desire and perspective ahead of a new season.

What did Kyle Trask say?

The 25-year-old spent a couple of years alongside the 7-time Super Bowl winner and knows the culture of the team better than Baker. With that advantage, he appeared confident in a press conference and shared his view on the job.

“I have just been told it’s an open competition. But at the end of the day, I know that the team is going to do what they have to do to put whoever on the field that’s going to allow our team to be the most successful,” the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award winner said. “And for me, I feel this time I just really need to hone in and be as consistent as I can.”

“Fortunately enough, I’ve had two years of prior experience with a very veteran quarterback room, and there’s a lot to take away from that,” the Bucs QB added. “And I’m going to try to implement some of those styles and routines that they had into my routine and hopefully that will make us more successful.”

The local Florida boy didn’t participate in the rookie year with the active roster but got a chance to appear on the pitch last season. Before that, the Bucs picked him 64th overall and signed a four-year, $5.54 million rookie contract with him.

On the other hand, Mayfield has a heavy resume as a college player; he won the Heisman Trophy, the Manning Award, the Maxwell Award, and every other award possible. But in his five-year professional career, he has yet to get any team recognition.

“This is a good opportunity for me … a great opportunity for me to compete with someone like Baker, who has definitely proven himself in this league,” Trask applauded the addition to the QB room.
