Months after surprising fans with offseason transformation, Mavs’ Luka Doncic admits concerns about injury setback

Luka Doncic was incredible at the FIBA World Cup even though his national team ended up in the seventh position in the tournament. His performance makes it hard to believe the Mavericks star was actually playing with an injury.

Doncic has been battling an injury to his left thigh since March. The Mavs star played the entire FIBA World Cup carrying the injury that has not fully healed yet. He recently gave out an update regarding his future in the upcoming NBA season and his injury status.

Luka Doncic opens up about battling injury

Luka Doncic incurred a left thigh strain in a match against the New Orleans Pelicans on 8 March 2023. He had to sit out five games because of the injury and after he returned, it looked like he had fully healed. But apparently that was not the case as in a recent conversation with Dallas Basketball’s Grant Afseth after Slovenia’s defeat against Lithuania, the Mavericks star said, “I do not know what to say. It’s not okay.”, hinting at the seriousness of his injury.

“At the same time, I have to prepare for one more game and then for a whole season in the NBA,” he said, talking about the seventh-place match against Italy and the upcoming NBA season. He further added, “I play no matter what, even in the Olympic qualifiers, if only I’m healthy.” He had an MRI scan the day after he suffered the injury and luckily there was no structural damage. The injury is a Grade 1 strain which should heal itself with 1-2 weeks of rest.

The El Matador was heavily busy with matches after he initially incurred the injury which did not let him have any time for rest. Now with the FIBA World Cup coming to an end, there is about a three-week gap before the pre-season training starts for the Dallas Mavericks. Luka should recover by then and be ready to perform his magic on the court.

Doncic’s game-changing adaptations have Mavericks fans thrilled

The adaptability of Luka Doncic has his fans thrilled for the upcoming NBA season. The transformation Luka had during the offseason was evident in his World Cup performance. Along with Kyrie Irving in the starting squad, the Dallas Mavericks look like a real threat in the Western Conference.

With two of the top 15 stars in the NBA, the Mavericks will have no problem in their offensive capabilities but they will need to do something about their defense as that has been a lacking point for the Mavs. Apart from that Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving both have to maintain their fitness because if any one of them gets injured or is unable to play, the attacking department will suffer a big blow.

Luka Magic has the adaptability to play through a few strains as proved in the World Cup and it would be exciting to see his chemistry with the Ankle taker. If all goes right we could see the Mavs dominating the league in the coming NBA season.
