Thiago Silva signs for Chelsea officially for free on a one-year contract

Chelsea have announced the signing of Thiago Silva on a one-year contract as per Chelsea’s official website. The contract has an option to extend the deal for one more year.

The Brazilian’s current contract ended in Paris Saint-Germain after their 0-1 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

Since the French league champions were reluctant to renew his contract, Silva joined the Blues on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old attended a medical with Chelsea in Milan yesterday.

After officially signing the deal, he will undergo a 14-day self-isolation as per the COVID-19 safety guidelines. Then, he will join the pre-season training campaign of Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.

Last Wednesday, the defender bade an emotional farewell to his former club in a social media post. With seven Ligue 1 trophies in his eight years career at the club, Thiago Silva is an undisputed Paris Saint-Germain legend.

Official Statements of Thiago Silva transfer

After signing the contract, Thiago Silva said with ecstasy. “I am so happy to be joining Chelsea. I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad for next season and I’m here to challenge for honours. See you soon Chelsea fans, I look forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon.”

Regarding this deal, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: “We are delighted to be able to add a player of Thiago Silva’s proven world-class credentials to our squad. Having performed at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here. Thiago will be an excellent fit and we hope he can add some new trophies to his impressive list of honors.”

Chelsea are spending a busy transfer market after receiving a two-year transfer ban. To bolster the attack, the Blues signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner previously. They are closing in for the deal of Kai Havertz as well.

On the other hand, for a compact and solid defense, Lampard has already signed Ben Chilwell and Malang Sarr from Leicester City and OGC Nice respectively.

Chilwell will join the first team straight, but Sarr will go back to Nice on loan to gain more experience. Now with the arrival of a veteran center-back like Thiago Silva, Lampard will surely eye the title glory for the next season.
