Islam Makhachev retained his lightweight championship and became the new pound-for-pound best fighter in the world after defeating Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. Many UFC fighters, however, rushed to Twitter to say that Volkavoski should have won.

Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski squared off in the octagon today at Perth’s RAC Arena. Makhachev, the defending lightweight champion, defeated Alexander Volkanovski, the reigning featherweight champion, by unanimous decision with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46.

In a fight between two of the best MMA fighters in the world, the outcome might have gone either way. Islam had remarkable resiliency, and Volka displayed his refined grappling skills.

How UFC fighters reacted to the super fight?

Fighters and fans of the Ultimate Fighting Championship have been waiting a long time for the super fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev, and as soon as it was over, they turned to Twitter to share their instant reactions.

The former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion of the UFC Daniel Cormier showed a bit of surprise saying, ”That was a bad scorecard. 3-2 Volk lost nothing tonight. He fought better than anyone thought he could. He is as good as anyone at any weight in the world. Great fight overall”

American MMA fighter Henry Cejudo described the fight as one of the most competitive fights in the history of the sport.

According to MMA journalist Chisanga Malata, the final scorecard was wild.

Jamaican-American bantamweight fighter  Aljamain Sterling expressed his excitement tweeting,” What a BIG round for Bulkanovski! The highest of levels and that right hand that dropped Islam was perfectly timed. I still think Islam wins this but what a fight!”
