Blaine Gabbert, the backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, recently drew parallels between his current teammate Patrick Mahomes and his former teammate Tom Brady, highlighting their shared traits as “maniacal perfectionists.”
Gabbert, who signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Chiefs after spending time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, expressed his admiration for both Mahomes and Brady during a press conference following organized team activities (OTAs).

In Gabbert’s opinion, Mahomes and Brady are two of the best players to have ever graced the game of football. He emphasized their meticulous approach to the game, both on and off the field.
Although they have different playing styles, Gabbert recognized the similarities in their work ethic, mindset, and dedication to the sport. According to him, these shared characteristics have contributed to their sustained success throughout their careers.
“You see the similarities and how they operate, meeting rooms, practice field,” Gabbert continued on the comparison. “Now, they are completely different players, as we all know, but the way they approach the game on and off the football field is the exact same way, and you can see why both have had sustained success early on and throughout their careers.”
Having spent two seasons with Brady in Tampa Bay, Gabbert witnessed firsthand the approach that made the veteran quarterback one of the greatests of all time. Now, being a part of the Chiefs organization and observing Mahomes closely, Gabbert sees a similar commitment to excellence.
He commended the quarterback for his dedication to constantly improving and approaching each day as if it were his first. Gabbert also noted that Mahomes is always seeking ways to enhance his skills and refine his game.
“[Mahomes is] a master of the system,” added Gabbert. “He’s still approaching it like it’s Day 1, still taking notes the same way as he did as a rookie. There’s always something that he wants to work on, always something to improve on, and always something to get better at,” he added.
Patrick Mahomes continues to learn from Brady
The young Chiefs quarterback is known to hold immense respect for Brady, and their connection has been evident since Patrick took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2018.
“He was just backing up Tom, so I’m asking for any advice he can give me because if you’re learning from that guy, you’re learning from the right guy,” Mahomes said.
He values any advice or insights he can gather from Gabbert, knowing that learning from someone who has backed up Brady can be a valuable experience.
The similarities highlighted by Gabbert between Mahomes and Brady speak to the level of dedication and commitment required to excel in the sport of football. Both quarterbacks have shown an unwavering desire to continually improve their skills and understand the intricacies of the game, which ultimately benefitted their teams and their legacy in the process.
