Decades after being named after Mike Tyson, Tyson Fury once revealed the price of Mike’s in-ring return

In the boxing world, many are aware that Tyson Fury was named after the legendary Mike Tyson. Years after taking Mike’s name, Tyson disclosed that there was a price that came with taking on Mike in a heavyweight showdown.

Tyson’s father, John Fury, who loved boxing and admired Mike Tyson’s prowess in the ring, gave his oldest son the name “Tyson” in the late 1980s when Mike was having the peak of his career.

Mike’s team contacted Fury for potential showdown

Boxing fans can’t help but wonder what would happen if the Tysons from two distinct eras ever squared off in the ring. Fury recently discussed how Mike’s management approached him about the possibilities of a significant boxing matchup in an interview with iFL TV.

“There was talk of it. His people contacted me. Mike and I had a phone call. It was all real but never materialized. Whoever was offering the comeback money to Mike offered us peanuts.” Fury said.

Fury received $10M offer from ESPN

Recently, Fury, who is thought to have reached the pinnacle of his career in boxing, was crowned the new WBC heavyweight champion. The British boxer, however, claims he was not offered a sizable sum of money to fight the great Mike Tyson.

“Mike was talking about £500 million ($620 million) figures, but what came back to us on paper was a joke. It was crazy. I did have a $10m offer from ESPN to do the fight as an exhibition.” Fury added.

Gypsy King’s double whammy situation had he agreed

Even though The Gypsy King thinks everyone has moved on from that fight but he still thinks he would have loved to share the ring with the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ and move around.

However, the 34-year-old boxer thinks there would’ve been some consequences that he did not want to face by fighting the legend.

“If he had won, then people would have said I was rubbish because a 53-year-old beat me. If I had beaten him, then I would have been a bully.”

Considering that it was a lose-lose situation for Fury and he didn’t really want to fight a man past his best so the fight later never materialized.
